The Story Merchants
On Monday 3rd July, Berkeley Primary School launched ‘The Story Merchants’, an anthology of poems and short stories written by children from Years 4, 5 and 6.
Writer-in-residence Ross Raisin, acclaimed Granta Under 40 Best Novelist, has worked with pupils since October to positively critique creative writing, develop their ideas, improve their confidence and perhaps most importantly, offer them a platform to showcase their own creative writing on a weekly basis.
Berkeley Primary School is the only primary school in the country to take part in the First Story project, and the pupils involved conducted themselves with such maturity as they introduced each other’s works by reading short biographies, before each child read a piece of their own writing from the anthology.
It was wonderful to see all of the children assume a real ownership and pride for their work. They threw themselves into the creative process with enthusiasm and commitment and this was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the hard work and creativity of the students at this school. Congratulations to the children who have contributed to ‘The Story Merchants’ – please continue to tell your stories and create unique pieces of writing to inspire others.
