Year 4 – Trip to the British Museum (2017)

British Museum 1

Year 4 recently visited the British Museum, as part of their ‘Ancient Egyptian’ topic. They travelled by bus and tube to reach central London and weaved their way through the hustle and bustle of the capital to reach the museum.

They had been invited to attend a workshop based on the legendary Book of the Dead! Zoe Stewart’s father was picked to represent a dead Egyptian who was trying to pass into the afterlife. They pupils learnt how he had to have his own ‘book of the dead’ to aid him in the many challenges, like facing scary Gods and traversing the many Egyptian landscapes. He did this by turning into various snakes and birds, in order to reach the afterlife and be happy.

After the amazing workshop pupils were given an opportunity to explore the Ancient Egyptian rooms, where they saw real life Mummies! They also saw some mummified animals, canopic jars (where your organs would be kept) and the equipment used to mummify the dead – including the wire they would use to mush up the brain – yuck!

The group returned to Berkeley with some very excited but tired children. Everyone had a wonderful time and would love to visit the museum again in the future – it’s free entry at the British Museum so anyone can go, anytime!
