Berkeley Academy Sport Premium Statement 2023-24, 19,480

The Sport Premium funding is used to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education (PE), physical activity and sport. This is done through developing and enhancing the PE and sport provision in the academy. In addition to this, pupils are provided with a range of enrichment opportunities relating to PE and sport, e.g. afterschool clubs run by qualified sports coaches.

We believe that all young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation in physical activity and a commitment to healthy living. Physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression), and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.

The sport premium grant is SPENT in THE FOLLOWING WAYS:

  • To provide targeted activities to encourage active play during break times and lunchtimes in partnership with Sports Plus
  • To establish sport clubs and activities after school in partnership with Sports Plus
  • To raise attainment in swimming to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum before the end of Key Stage 2 through providing swimming lessons at Heston Pool
  • To hire qualified specialist sports practitioners to enhance the delivery of the PE curriculum in partnership with Sports Plus
  • To organise, coordinate and take part in sport competitions or tournaments within the academy or across the local area with the support of Sports Plus

THE IMPACT OF THE SPORT PREMIUM ON PUPILS’ PE AND SPORT PARTICIPATION AND ATTAINMENT IN 2022-2023 WAS DEMONSTRATED THROUGH:

  • Increased participation in sports clubs
  • All targeted children taking part in swimming lessons at Heston Pool within the KS2 PE curriculum to maximise the number of pupils being able to swim 25 metres
  • Increased enrichment opportunities relating to PE and sports, e.g. on Wider Curriculum Days, during community events and through participation in external competitions and tournaments
  • Continuing to improve the quality of education in PE through reviewing the curriculum plans and introducing an electronic tracking system to monitor the progress of pupils towards PE National Curriculum objectives in each academic year  - which will inform lesson planning

THE IMPACT OF THE SPORT PREMIUM ON PUPILS’ PE AND SPORT PARTICIPATION AND ATTAINMENT IN 2023-2024 WILL BE DEMONSTRATED THROUGH

  • Further enhancing the programme of activities and clubs offered to pupils and tracking participation through for example the ‘Activity Passport’ and getting through to next stages in tournaments, being awarded trophies, etc.
